Routing curves in wooden edges using the MFK

Routing curve
Rounding wood and routing curves in wooden edges is a key element of craftspeople's work when creating furniture or other workpieces. This guide explains how to round edges using a router and create clean curves in wooden materials. It clearly emphasises how to avoid creating black burn marks and other imperfections and how to guide the router correctly.

    Description

Neat, precise curves on workpiece edges are the hallmark of a professional craftsperson. Routers tipping over, black burn marks on the curve and frayed edges at the start and end of the routing are among the errors that can occur when trying to create clean curves.

With the Festool MFK module edge router, producing precise curves is child's play. The roundover cutter with bearing guide guarantees neat routing results at the start and end points and prevents burn marks from being created when routing. The long router table support means that the cutter can be guided securely, without any tilting on the workpiece edge. As a result, rounding edges using a module edge router is quick and produces neat results.

    Tools/accessories

The following tools and accessories are recommended for use in this application example:

    Preparation/set-up

    • Before starting routing, the following preparatory work must be carried out:

      • First, check that the cutter bearing guide is running smoothly and free from dirt.
      • Next, insert the cutter according to the instructions.

    • Connecting the machine to the support table:

      • Inserting machine into support table
      • Tighten the black retaining screw on the left-hand side of the support table

    • Adjusting the routing depth for routing the curve:

      • Loosening the locking screw on the front and rear side of the support table
      • Adjusting the routing depth using the green adjusting wheel.
      • Re-tightening the locking screw

    Procedure

    • When producing a curve using a router, take the feed direction of the machine into account. The cutter always rotates clockwise when viewed from the machine. The machine should always be guided in the opposite direction. For this reason, it must always be ensured that the machine is guided against the workpiece anti-clockwise.
